Infinity Power, based in Egypt and backed by Masdar, has signed a 20-year capacity change agreement (CCA) with Senegal's national grid operator Senelec to supply energy through a new 40M/160MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system.
The BESS is planned at the Tobene substation in Thies and it will store energy from Infinity's 158.7MW Taiba Ndiyae wind farm 70km from Dakar, the largest in West Africa. Construction is expected to commence in early 2024 and operations to start in 2025. The system will help Senelec stabilise the electricity grid and pave the way for further renewable energy growth in Senegal, saving the grid operator about US$165m over its operating life.
